This paper offers a critical interpretation of J. M. Coetzee’s Disgrace (1999), examining the novel’s engagement with post-apartheid South Africa, race, gender, sexuality, violence, and ethical responsibility. Through the character of David Lurie, the study explores privilege, desire, power, and moral accountability. It also examines Lucy’s experience of sexual violence and her complex response to historical and social transformation. Drawing on feminist perspectives and animal ethics, the paper considers the interconnectedness of human vulnerability, gendered violence, and compassion toward animals. Ultimately, Disgrace is read as a complex critique of power, responsibility, and unresolved historical tensions.
